SCPA was founded in 1973 as part of the Bronson desegregation lawsuit settlement. Michael Owens joined the School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) as principal in July 2015, coming home to Cincinnati after a professional career with Columbus (Ohio) Public Schools. Owens is a 1988 graduate of SCPA, where he focused on vocal and instrumental music.

Upon graduation, SCPA's arts students receive a CPS High School Diploma and a SCPA Artistic Diploma. Many arts students at SCPA in grades 9-12 receive Ohio Career Technical Education to fully prepare them for careers in the arts.
