Schwarzenfels Castle (German: Burg Schwarzenfels) is a ruined castle in the village of Schwarzenfels in Hesse, Germany. The castle was damaged and became a ruin in 1648 near the end of the Thirty Years War, but the German State of Hesse has restored portions of the castle and maintained the grounds around the castle.

History. It is assumed that the progenitor of the lords and counts of Hanau, Reinhard I (around 1225-1281), built Schwarzenfels Castle, which is first mentioned in a document in 1280. He was the first representative of King Rudolf I of Habsburg (1218-1291) in the Wetterau, entrusted with the duties of a bailiff.

HESSEN. The hilltop castle on the edge of the Spessart was built by the lords of Hanau and extended like a castle in the 16th century. The ruins of the core castle and the gate tower are particularly impressive. Today there is a youth hostel in the stables.
