Scotch whisky. Whisky made in Scotland is known as Scotch whisky, or simply as "Scotch" (especially in North America). It means the whisky is distilled in Scotland. It is usually a blend of malt and grain whiskies, and aged in barrels ('casks') for at least three years (four years for exports).
“Uisge beatha”, meaning “water of life” in the native Gaelic, is what whisky was originally called. Through generations of reinterpretation, slang, lazy tongue, and just the basic evolution of language, we derived at the word “whisky”. At this time whisky was still mostly a monastic pursuit.
