May 4, 2021 · Sean Ellis, who spent more than 20 years in prison for the 1993 killing of Boston police detective John Mulligan, was acquitted of all charges by a Suffolk Superior Court judge on Tuesday. The judge ruled that the case was tainted by significant and egregious police corruption and prosecutorial misconduct, and ordered a new trial for the single gun possession conviction.

May 4, 2021 · Sean Ellis, the man behind the Netflix documentary Trial Four, won a motion for a new trial on the gun conviction that remains on his record from the 1993 killing of Boston Police Detective John Mulligan. A judge ruled that justice was not done in the case and ordered a new trial. The district attorney will not re-prosecute him if he is acquitted.
