I've always thought the reason why is that he had made a lot of decisions under the influence that he thought cancer would kill him - he was willing to cook meth since cancer would kill him soon, he was willing to get involved with a terrifying drug lord because cancer would kill him soon, he had killed two people because he thought the cancer would get him soon.
