JMA magnitudes are based (as typical with local scales) on the maximum amplitude of the ground motion; they agree "rather well" with the seismic moment magnitude M w in the range of 4.5 to 7.5, but underestimate larger magnitudes. Notes
Haiti portal. v. t. e. At 08:29:09 EDT on 14 August 2021, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the Tiburon Peninsula in the Caribbean nation of Haiti. [1] It had a 10-kilometre-deep (6.2 mi) hypocenter near Petit-Trou-de-Nippes, approximately 150 kilometres (93 mi) west of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
An earthquake occurred off the coast of the Alaska Peninsula on July 28, 2021, at 10:15 p.m. local time. [5] The large megathrust earthquake had a moment magnitude ( Mw) of 8.2 according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). [6] A tsunami warning was issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) but later ...
The 2020 Sparta earthquake was a relatively uncommon intraplate earthquake that occurred near the small town of Sparta, North Carolina, on August 9, 2020 at 8:07 am local time. The earthquake had a moment magnitude of 5.1, and a shallow depth of 7.6 kilometers (4.7 mi). [2] Shaking was reported throughout the Southern, Midwestern, and ...
Each red bar shows the number of earthquakes daily detected (left-handside scale). More than 16,000 earthquakes were detected within 2 years. White circles show the magnitude of ~1,400 earthquakes which could be located (right-handside magnitude scale).
The local magnitude \(M_L\), or Richter’s magnitude, is often used for small events because it is easy to calculate (however, uncertainties are often large!). The moment magnitude \(M_w\) is the only magnitude that relates unambiguously to some physical earthquake parameter, the seismic moment \(M_0\).
41 dead, 691 injuries [4] An earthquake measuring 6.6 Mw on the moment magnitude scale struck Iburi Subprefecture in southern Hokkaido, Japan, on 6 September 2018 at 3:08 a.m. JST. The earthquake's epicenter was near Tomakomai and occurred at a depth of 35.0 kilometers (21.7 mi). The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) registered a magnitude of 6 ...
