Predictors of shorter survival were age, nosocomial origin of sepsis, diabetes, cerebrovascular disease, duration of stay in the intensive care unit, and renal replacement therapy.

Septic shock, the most severe complication of sepsis, carries a high mortality. Septic shock occurs in response to an inciting agent, which causes both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory immune system activation.
Septic shock involves persistent hypotension (defined as the need for vasopressors to maintain mean arterial pressure ≥ 65 mm Hg, and a serum lactate level > 18 mg/dL [2 mmol/L] despite adequate volume resuscitation [2]).
