Sheen Priory (ancient spelling: Shene, Shean, etc.) in Sheen, now Richmond, London, was a Carthusian monastery founded in 1414 within the royal manor of Sheen, on the south bank of the Thames, upstream and approximately 9 miles southwest of the Palace of Westminster.
Shene Manor, Surrey, England. Originally part of the Royal Manor of Kingston, Shene (with Kew) was formed into a separate manor by Henry I, who granted it to the Norman family of Belet. It remained in lay hands until the manor house was rented by Edward, Prince of Wales, in the 1290’s. The manor reverted to Crown ownership by 1313.

In the year 1414 Henry V. founded at Sheen, Richmond, a priory, known as the House of Jesus of Bethlehem, for forty monks of the Carthusian order. This was the last of the religious foundations of Surrey. The foundation charter (fn. 1) describes the site with much nicety.
The royal palace at Sheen, on the bank of the Thames, was restored by Henry VII after a catastrophic fire in 1497. Renamed in tribute to the first Tudor king’s title as earl of Richmond, it became the focus of intense rebuilding, although none of the accounts has survived.

Richmond palace began as a manor house at Sheen (Surrey) and was much used by Edward III, who died there. Henry V restored it and, after a disastrous fire in 1497, Henry VII rebuilt it on the grand scale, giving it his own title of Richmond. Mary used it frequently and Elizabeth died there, but during the civil wars it fell into decay.
