      • Short answer- ‘need’ is a strong word, but your synth tracks would certainly benefit greatly from a preamp. Simply put, adding a preamp to your synth lines will make them come through a little stronger and have more impact on the mix. Any preamp, whether they be solid state or tube are designed to make your signal louder.

  3. Synths are line level and typically don't need a pre. DI to a cheap pre will likely not give you much other than noise. Some nicer pres can add colour to the sound. Overall I'd say if you aren't sure if you need one, you probably don't.

  4. Aug 13, 2016 · The trick for recording line inputs through a nice preamp is to bring the line input to a Mic level before going into the preamp. For example, before my Rhodes hits the Red 8, it goes through a J48 active stereo DI that is powered with 48V phantom power from my preamp.

For the most part you go rather directly to DA converters to avoid extra noise.

  6. Sep 13, 2014 · Whether or not a Pre amps LINE in can add gain depends on the pre amp design. A guitar or synth can be plugged into a DI box and the XLR mic level output is compatible with any Pre amp input. DI's can accept line, or lower instrument levels and convert it to mic level.

  7. Generally speaking a synth should output line level signals and definitely shouldnt need a preamp. People often use them anyway, but that’s largely to add some saturation & color.

This means you will hear them clearly when connected through a mixer or directly to an active monitor or speaker. However, if you are using your synthesizer for live performance, it’s a good idea to use a keyboard amp to give you more stage volume.
