May 27, 2019 · Short answer: ‘ need’ is a strong word, but your synth tracks would certainly benefit greatly from a preamp. Simply put, adding a preamp to your synth lines will make them come through a little stronger and have more impact on the mix. Any preamp, whether solid state or tube, is designed to make your signal louder.

Aug 13, 2016 · The trick for recording line inputs through a nice preamp is to bring the line input to a Mic level before going into the preamp. For example, before my Rhodes hits the Red 8, it goes through a J48 active stereo DI that is powered with 48V phantom power from my preamp.
Pres are useful for synths in a couple of contexts... 1: Gain Staging. Believe it or not, it isn't always best to run your synth with the vca at full and the output all the way up.. 2: Tone is definitely affected, for the better by a good pre and for the worse by a bad one. After a certain level it's just a preference thing.

Now, if you want to add some character to the synth before hitting the inputs, you could add some kind of preamp stage, many will have a DI (sometimes called 'Instrument') input or an option to switch to line level. There are lots of options in that catagory at all price points.

Feb 25, 2010 · A vibey analog board with a cool e.q. does wonders for synth recording. For DI synth recording I run in through my board, hit the preamp and e.q., then out through two aux's into any number of guitar pedal combos and then into a stereo channel into my recorder.
