I received Dutch Meyers Spread Offense book (that had been out of print for some time), as a Christmas present some years back. It is still one of my prize collectibles. This off season I started reading everything I could find on Sid Gillman.

Sid went on to become the foremost authority on forward passing offense. He was the first coach to produce divisional champions in both the National and American Football Leagues. Gillman’s first pro coaching job came in 1955 when he became the Los Angeles Rams head coach.

In 1977, Gillman was hired as offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears in 1977. The Bears, with Walter Payton leading the way in rushing yards (1,852), won 9 games and earned their first postseason appearance in 14 years, which ended in a loss in the Divisional Round.
