Sigismund sought to create a personal union between the Commonwealth and Sweden (Polish–Swedish union), and succeeded for a time in 1592. He was deposed in 1599 from the Swedish throne by his uncle, Charles IX of Sweden. Sigismund remains a highly controversial figure in Poland.

By the outbreak of World War I the town had already over 2,000 inhabitants. During the war, the town was the headquarters of the Russian 10th Army of the Western Front.
