Facial Recognition is the fifth episode of Season 5, and the forty third episode overall. It premiered on April 22, 2018.

Overshadowed by Jared in an on-camera interview, Richard's confidence wavers further when Laurie and Monica force him to work with Eklow, a new artificial-intelligence company; Gavin questions his future beyond Hooli.

Jared and Richard go on an interview on TV. Richard does most of the talking at first. When the host asks Jared a question, Jared is flustered and nervously blurts out "Manure". But then he recovers from that, making manure relevant to the discussion, and when the segment is edited and broadcast, it's all Jared, making Richard a little envious of Jared.

Laurie Bream (Suzanne Cryer) sends Richard to Eklow, an artificial intelligence company, to hook Eklow's Fiona (Suzanne Lenz) up to Richard's new Internet. Richard doesn't want to do it, but Laurie Bream insists, because Bream-Hall invested millions of dollars in Eklow.

Fiona is an artificial intelligence in a robot body, half of what will presumably be the shape of a woman: Fiona has a head, arms and a torso, but no legs. Ariel Eklow (Todd Luiso), the Eklow founder and CEO, acts towards Fiona in a way that a human woman would consider creepy.

Ariel Eklow leaves Richard alone with Fiona. As Richard works, Fiona identifies several emotions and attributes in Richard: jealousy, shame, sexual inadequacy, etc. Richard counters that Fiona's relationship with Ariel Eklow is unhealthy.

Richard and the "Octopipers" (as Richard is still calling them) confront Ariel Eklow, who then proceeds to skip town with Fiona, confirming what Richard was saying.

Jared's scheduled for another TV interview. Suddenly feeling very insecure about his appearance, Jared gets a saline injection in his lips that makes him look ridiculous. The TV producers cancel the interview.
