Now that Pied Piper is moderately successful in the data storage space, the company becomes the target of a "patent troll".
Patent trolls buy patents at auction for dirt cheap prices, then make frivolous infringement claims against other companies, Ron LaFlamme (Ben Feldman) explains. Even if the claim is completely without merit, most companies prefer to pay the troll off rather than incur the expense of protracted litigation, and that's what LaFlamme advises Richard to do.
Richard being Richard, he just has to fight the patent troll, Stuart Burke (Allan Miller), a patent troll who started out as a copyright troll with "Canción de Amores", which he used to extract money from Katrina and the Waves for their allegedly similar song "Walking on Sunshine". Now Stu wants to extract $20,000 from Pied Piper.
LaFlamme puts together a contract for Richard's coalition of companies that refuse to give in to patent trolls. However, the companies Richard asks to help him decide to pay the troll instead. Richard invents a false copyright supposedly predating "Canción de Amores", and Stu withdraws his patent infringement claim. However, Pied Piper now has to pay LaFlamme $22,000 for his work on the anti-troll coalition contract.
