May 13, 2024 · Alexander Fleming, Scottish bacteriologist best known for his discovery of penicillin in 1928, which started the antibiotic revolution. He was recognized for that achievement in 1945, when he received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, along with Howard Walter Florey and Ernst Boris Chain.
He named the active substance penicillin. Sir Alexander wrote numerous papers on bacteriology, immunology and chemotherapy, including original descriptions of lysozyme and penicillin. They have been published in medical and scientific journals.

Returning to his basement laboratory at the hospital after having been on holiday, he found an unwashed petri dish in which mould had been contaminated by streptococcus.
