Sisimiut ( Greenlandic: [sisimiut] ), formerly known as Holsteinsborg, is the capital and largest city of the Qeqqata municipality, the second-largest city in Greenland, and the largest Arctic city in North America. [Note 1] It is located in central-western Greenland, on the coast of Davis Strait, approximately 320 km (200 mi) north of Nuuk .

With a population of 5,509 people (2019), Sisimiut is the 2nd largest city in Greenland. Surprisingly, it is also one of the most overlooked!
Sisimiut means “”the people living in a place where there are fox dens”” in the Greenlandic language. Its Danish name was “”Holsteinsborg””, which means “Holsteins’ castle/fort” for the Danish Count Johan Ludvig Holstein, when it was a colony. Sisimiut is the second biggest town in Greenland after Nuuk.
- Sisimiut Museum. Visiting the Sisimiut Museum, located by the town’s natural harbor, will take you on a journey through the thousands of years of culture and history that surround this harsh and remote environment.
- Taseralik Cultural Centre. The Taseralik Cultural Centre in Sisimiut is a space designed to demonstrate and preserve the cultural legacy of the region.
- Take a City Tour. During the summer months, Sisimiut employs a local bus service to offer city tours to visitors. I highly recommend doing this right after you arrive to get your bearings and really get a feel for the city.
- Go to Qiviut. Located in the heart of Sismiut is a small store that you shouldn’t miss visiting. Qiviut is the Greenlandic word used to describe the inner wool that is retrieved from Muskoxen.

In the Sisimiut backcountry, there is a lift for alpine skiing, and there is an incredible number of cross-country ski slopes. Sisimiut is the southernmost town in West Greenland where sled dogs are allowed, so you meet many dog sleds within but especially outside the town. Many locals love to get on their snowmobiles and drive across the plains.
The fact that approximately 30% of snowmobiles in the whole Greenland are registered in Sisimiut (Greenland in Figures 2020) shows just how active the people of Sisimiut are, especially in the winter time. The city is surrounded by mountains and hills and also has a big back country. Sisimiut is an ideal destination especially for nature lovers.
