A centrepiece on Plymouth's Hoe, Smeaton's Tower has become one of the South West's most well-known landmarks. The lighthouse was originally built on the Eddystone reef in 1759 at a cost of £40,000, but was taken down in the early 1880s when it was discovered that the sea was undermining the rock it was standing on.

Nov 27, 2020 · Smeaton’s Tower, Plymouth. Smeaton’s Tower is the lighthouse on Plymouth Hoe. It was the third Eddystone Lighthouse to be built on the treacherous Eddystone Reef, 14 miles southwest of the Devon city of Plymouth. After it was replaced in 1882 it was dismantled and brought ashore to Plymouth Hoe where it was rebuilt as a landmark.
The red-and-white stripes of Smeaton's Tower rise from the middle of the Plymouth Hoe headland. For an insight into past lighthouse keepers' lives, head up 93 stone steps and through the circular rooms to emerge on to an open-air platform for stunning views of the city, Dartmoor and the sea.
