One of the most recognizable structures on Plymouth Hoe is Smeaton’s Tower, a historic lighthouse. Originally built on the Eddystone Reef in 1759 by engineer John Smeaton, it was dismantled and reassembled on the Hoe in 1884 after being replaced by a newer lighthouse.

It was the third Eddystone Lighthouse to be built on the treacherous Eddystone Reef, 14 miles southwest of the Devon city of Plymouth. After it was replaced in 1882 it was dismantled and brought ashore to Plymouth Hoe where it was rebuilt as a landmark.
