Let's start off with two tracks that you won't hear on the radio, but which have their own niches. Both of these songs had under 15,000 plays on Spotify at the time of testing.
Next, we move into some tracks from the depths of Spotify. Both these songs had under 1,000 plays on the service when we tested them.
For the final round, we want music that almost nobody has heard. For this, we'll use Forgotify, a service to discover songs that have zero plays on Spotify. This is perfect music for challenging the music recognition apps.
SoundHound comes in a distant third, as it correctly identified only one track out of six. For every other song, it failed to identify the music on both tries. - Shazam. Once a top downloaded mobile app, Shazam’s dominance has declined in recent years. That said, it’s still, by far, the most well-known song identifier app on the market.
- Genius. A dark horse in the song identifier app space, Genius is a very good app for figuring out unknown music. The interface is a bit more cluttered than Shazam’s, and it focuses less on music recognition than song lyrics, but it did a reasonably good job of identifying tracks nonetheless.
- Soundhound. Shazam’s biggest rival over the years has been the song identifier app Soundhound. It includes a lot of the same features as Shazam, like its integration with Amazon Music and Spotify.
- Google Assistant. OK, it’s technically not a standalone app on Android, but the Google Assistant is free and works really well as a song identifier. It took about eight seconds to identify music, making it among the quickest on this list.

- Google Assistant. For Android users, Google Assistant is one of the best ways to recognize songs on the go. Just say “Hey Google, what is this song” or “recognize/identify this song” and Google will start listening to the music.
