    Sofia var datter af den polske Rikissa (dronning af Sverige og tidligere kortvarigt dronning af Danmark) og en russisk fyrste. Hun var gennem sit ægteskab med Valdemar den Store dronning af Danmark. De blev gift i 1157, men var allerede blevet trolovet 1154. Hun ligger begravet i Sankt Bendts Kirke i Ringsted.

    Sophia was the half-sister of Canute V of Denmark. After her mother's marriage to the Swedish king, she followed her to Sweden and was raised at the Swedish court. She was betrothed to Valdemar in 1154 as a form of alliance between Denmark and Sweden.

In her previous marriage with the Danish king Magnus, Richiza had a son, Knud, of whom Sophia was a half-sister. Sophia’s engagement to Valdemar was meant to seal an alliance between Knud and Valdemar.
