The Spanish Synagogue is the most recent synagogue in the Prague Jewish Town. Built in 1868 for the local Reform congregation on the site of the 12th-century Altschul, which was the oldest synagogue in the Prague ghetto.
When Isabella of Castile expelled the Jews from Spain at the end of the 15th century, one of their groups found home in Prague. They were given this Old School as the house of prayers, and since then the building has also been called the Spanish Synagogue.

This, newest of the six historic Prague synagogues was built in the Spanish Moorish style in the second half of the 19th century. The walls, carved doors, railings, galleries and dome are decorated with stylised Oriental motifs, and the overall impression is underlined by stucco arabesques and stained-glass windows.
In fact our Spanish Synagogue is based on the 1858 design of what was the Leopoldstadt Temple in Vienna which was destroyed during the Kristallnacht on November 10th 1938. So the Old School was demolished in 1867 to be rebuilt into the original Spanish Synagogue the following year.
