    • 1. (circa 1585–1622), Pawtuxet Indian, later of the Wampanoag tribe in what is now Massachusetts. Captured by an English sea captain in 1615 and taken to Spain to be sold into slavery, he escaped and eventually returned to North America. He befriended the Pilgrims in Plymouth Colony in 1621 and acted as their interpreter and adviser on planting and fishing.
