Situated at the Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral is the most important and largest church in Prague. The cathedral is the burial place of the former Czech kings and a home of the Czech Crown Jewels.

The bell tower of the St. Nicolas Church was built by K. I. Dienzehofer. It was finished in 1755 by A. Lurago. It has the same height as the church cupola and its gallery is 65 metres high and accessible to public. There are 299 stairs leading to the gallery. The bell tower was the last “warning tower” in Prague.
In 1781, the decoration in St. Nicholas was removed after emperor Josef II ordered the closure of all monasteries without a social function. Then, in 1870, St. Nicholas became Russian Orthodox. During the Second World War, Czech army units stationed at St. Nicholas were set to work restoring the church, working alongside professional artists.

It sits just down the hill from Prague Castle and it is a short walk from Charles Bridge. Note: there is a second St. Nicholas Church which is located in the Old Town, next to the Old Town Square.
