St. Florian's Gate owes its new name to the relics of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters, steelworkers and chimney sweeps, which are located in the nearby Basilica. In medieval times, Krakow was surrounded by a solid wall with eight defensive gates. St. Florian's Gate is the only one that has survived to this day.
It was built around 1300, although the top is a later addition. The adjoining walls, together with two towers, have also been left standing. The Florian Gate together with the nearby Barbican form part of a museum called the City Defence Walls, and one admission ticket covers entry to both.
