Of the old fortifications only a fragment with the Florian Gate, a few towers and the Barbican have remained. The Main Market Square (10 acres) plays a role of Kraków’s salon. It’s embellished by the Cloth Hall, St Mary’s Church, a tiny St Adalbert’s Church, the Town Hall Tower and many old houses, each with its own historical genealogy.
It stretches between St. Florian’s Gate and marvelous Wawel Castle. With the shortest route adopted, you would need less than 30 minutes of running to cover the distance between both hallmarks. But – believe us – due to the number of attractions the Old Town of Krakow offers, you would rather want to stroll around and take the scenic route.

It gives you an idea of what the city looked like hundreds of years ago. It is one of the top places if you love history too. Jun 24, 2019 · St Florian’s Gate Tower. Another keystone in Krakow’s defensive history is the St Florian’s Gate Tower. Not far from the Barbican, the tower was built in the aftermath of the Tatar attack back in 1241. After this attack destroyed much of Krakow, the city got serious – and set about building one hell of a tower.
As shown, they depict Flrorian's Gate in Krakow, Krakow Castle and City in the 15th Century, and the Tyniec Monastery on the Vistula River. The five pictorial definitive postage stamps shown above (Mi. #66-70, Sc. #N58 // N72) were issued between August and September 1941 .
The nearby Floriańska Street guides us to St. Florian’s Gate, an ancient entryway to the Old Town. A walk through the gate reveals the Barbikan Krakowski, a circular fortress once connected to the city’s ramparts and the urban Planty Park encircling the Old Town.
