Jul 11, 2023 · The Kenyan government considers an expansion of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Kisumu, Malaba, and Isiolo by June 2027. The expansion will cost a staggering U$15,317,286,600 (or almost KShs2.1 trillion), according to Kenya’s State Department of Transport. This SGR project covers 2,746 kilometres from Kisumu to Isiolo via Malaba.

Operation. The railway with a gauge of 2 feet (610 mm) was built and operated by the Colonial Sugar Refinery Co.. The operation started in December 1914 with free, twice-weekly, return passenger train services and weekly public goods trains, which transported pipes for the manganese mines as well as agricultural produce such as potatoes, onions, rice, maize, and other food.
