    • Commander, 2256
    • Convicted Prisoner, 2256
    • Science Specialist, 2256

    • First Officer/Science Officer, 3189
    • Captain, 3189

Burnham began her Starfleet career in 2249 onboard the USS Shenzhou under the command of the Prime universe’s Philippa Georgiou. By 2256, when Discoverybegins, she has advanced to the rank of commander and is serving as Georgiou’s first officer. Presumably, her advancement through the ranks at this point has been steady and typical, with no demotions or similar punishments. Her relationship with Georgiou closely resembles that of other captains and first officers: close and familiar with a great deal of trust. Burnham’s actions during Season 1, Episode 2, "The Battle of the Binary Stars," lead to a court-martial and conviction of mutiny: the only Starfleet officer to do so at that point. She’s stripped of rank and sentenced to life in prison, only to be assigned to the Discovery thanks to Captain Lorca some six months later. She arrives on Discovery at the beginning of Season 1, Episode 3, "Context Is for Kings," still a prisoner. She remains so for the length of the episode.

Though she wasn’t formally reinstated into Starfleet when she began serving on the Discovery, Burnham held the rank of science specialist as of the end of "Context Is for Kings." That fits with her background -- she studied at the Vulcan Science Academy before joining Starfleet -- and gives her a reason to have extended contact with fellow science department figures Sylvia Tilly and Paul Stamets. She holds this position for the bulk of Season 1 until being formally reinstated in Starfleet at the end of Season 1, Episode 15, "Will You Take My Hand?"

Following Burnham’s attempts to end the war with the Klingons, she is pardoned for her previous crimes and reinstated at her previous rank of commander. She spends the bulk of Season 2 as chief science officer while the Discovery is under the command of Christopher Pike, starting with Season 2, Episode 1, "Brothers." She still holds it during DiscoverySeason 2, Episode 14, "Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2," when she is vaulted into the future ahead of the ship. Michael arrives in the 32nd century approximately one year before the rest of Discovery in Season 3, Episode 1, "That Hope Is You, Part 1." She still holds the rank of commander. Still, with Starfleet shattered in the wake of the Burn, it doesn’t give her much authority. Her rank serves an important symbolic purpose, such as raising the flag with Sahil at the conclusion of "That Hope Is You," but she needs a position with more practical leverage. She becomes a courier with Cleveland Booker, which allows her to travel the galaxy, get a sense of the surroundings and look for signs of the Discovery.

Burnham retains her rank of commander when she rejoins the ship in 3189 and never loses it. However, she undergoes a mild dip in station during Season 3. She accepts a position as the Discovery’s first officer under Captain Saru in Season 3, Episode 3, "People of Earth," though she warns him at the time that she may not be ready for the position. She’s demoted in Season 3, Episode 7, "Unification III," for disobeying orders. Sylvia Tilly is promoted to first officer in her stead, while Burnham serves as chief science officer following her demotion.

The long arc of Burnham’s journey through Starfleet finally reaches its apex in Season 3, Episode 14, "That Hope Is You, Part 2," when she becomes captain of the Discovery at the head of a freshly reminted Starfleet. Saru steps down as captain to minister Su’kal, and Burnham is given command in his wake: leapfrogging Tilly to retain her position as first officer. The presumption is that she will stay in the position permanently as Discovery moves forward. However, judging by the first three seasons, there is no guarantee.
