    – Artim to Data, 2375 (Star Trek: Insurrection)

Artim, son of Sojef, was born on the Ba'ku planet in 2363. Prior to his meeting to Data and the crew of the USS Enterprise-E in 2375, Artim never had any interaction with technology. When Data first revealed himself to the Ba'ku, Artim was afraid of him. However, when the village was under attack and his father was captured by the Son'a, Artim relied on Data for comfort and support.

Eventually Artim learned to understand a little more about technology via Data, as well as gain a playmate.

    Background information

Artim was played by Michael Welch. In a character description that was written by Michael Piller and was used by Casting Directors Junie Lowry-Johnson and Ron Surma to seek a performer to play the role, Artim was described thus; "A 12 year old Ba’ku boy. Smart and inquisitive. He has been taught to be prejudiced against all technology as his people have rejected machines in their lives. When he encounters Data, he has a built-in fear that comes with this kind of prejudice. Through the affection and attention Data gives him during the adventure, they are able to bridge the [gap] between the two worlds, and Artim learns to appreciate Data for what he is and overcomes his prejudice at the same time he helps Data learn a little bit about what it’s like to be a humanoid child." (Fade In: The Making of Star Trek Insurrection [page number? • edit]) According to the novelization of Star Trek: Insurrection his mother was named Barel. She died shortly after he was born.
