This article is about the US state of North Carolina, located in the center of the eastern United States with a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. It provides information on its history, geography, climate and major cities including Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham.
The US state of North Carolina is located in the center of the eastern United States and has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It borders Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee.
First settled by English in late 1600s, part of original territory of US; separated from South Carolina in 1712 and ratified Constitution as 12th state in 1789.
Divided into 100 counties with humid subtropical climate; features sandy islands Outer Banks, Atlantic Coastal Plain (Tidewater region), Piedmont Plateau (hilly region between coastal plain and Appalachian Mountains), Blue Ridge Mountains/Great Smoky Mountains (densely forested mountain chains).
A major refuge for temperate zone flora/fauna that survived Pleistocene glaciations; covers over 200k ha centered on ridgeline Great Smoky Mountains subrange Appalachian chain; home to largest remains Arctic-Tertiary Geoflora once covered entire Northern Hemisphere.
Largest cities have population >100k include Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham International Airport is second busiest airport after Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
