I see State of the Union as a thematic and spiritual successor to Capra’s Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. But in this case, Capra focuses on the corruption of the individual and the idealist, by politics and the promise of power. Tracy and Hepburn are in top form and the movie has a magnificent supporting cast.
