Steyr (German pronunciation: [ˈʃtaɪ̯ɐ] ; Central Bavarian: Steia) is a statutory city, located in the Austrian federal state of Upper Austria. It is the administrative capital, though not part of Steyr-Land District. Steyr is Austria's 12th most populated town and the 3rd largest town in Upper Austria.
Austria is a federal republic consisting of nine states (German: Bundesländer). The states are sub-divided into districts and statutory cities (Statutarstädte). Districts are subdivided into municipalities (Gemeinden). Statutory Cities have the competencies otherwise granted to both districts and municipalities.
