Stella Adler (1901–1992), founder of the school. The Stella Adler Studio of Acting, in New York City, was founded in 1949 by Adler. In 1969, it became the first professional training school to become affiliated with New York University 's Tisch School of the Arts. The studio became a 501 (c)3 not-for-profit organization in 2000.

In 1972, the Stella Adler Studio of Acting became the first professional actor training school to become affiliated with NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. The program has continued since, leading students to a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and combining academic studies at New York University with professional training at the studio.

In the early 1940s, Stella began to teach at the Erwin Piscator Workshop at the New School for Social Research. She left the faculty in 1949 to establish her own studio called the Stella Adler Theatre Studio (later renamed the Stella Adler Conservatory of Acting and finally the Stella Adler Studio of Acting).
