  1. Steventon was Jane Austen’s birthplace. It is a village in the north of Hampshire, some seven miles south west of Basingstoke. Her father was Rector of Steventon for 40 years until his retirement in 1801. Her eldest brother, James, succeeded him in this office.

  2. In 1823 William Knight became rector of Steventon and moved into a newly-built rectory, having the old one pulled down. But the rest of the neighborhood hasn't changed! The lanes, hedgerows and meadows still look untouched, and the Steventon church where Mr. Austen preached looks nearly as it did to Jane and her family.

This pump replaced the wood pump from Jane’s time (see drawing).
