Creon, the corrupt King of Thebes, has killed their husbands in battle and won’t let the queens retrieve and bury their husbands’ remains. Theseus is hesitant to postpone his wedding night, but Emilia and Hippolyta eventually convince him to do the noble thing and lead an army to defeat Creon.
Plot Summary. Immediately after Theseus and Hippolyta are married, three widowed queens arrive from Thebes, begging Theseus to go to war with the tyrant Creon so that their husbands’ bodies can receive proper burial. Hippolyta and her sister Emilia also plead for them, and he agrees to go off to fight.
Synopsis. A prologue informs the audience that the play is based on a story from Chaucer . Three queens come to plead with Theseus and Hippolyta, rulers of Athens, to avenge the deaths of their husbands by the hand of the tyrant Creon of Thebes. Creon has killed the three kings and refuses to allow them proper burial.

Arcite and Palamon, Theban knights and devoted cousins, are imprisoned in Athens. From their cell, they see Emilia, the sister-in-law of Theseus, Duke of Athens.
Love at first sight. Imprisoned in Athens, the cousins catch sight of Hippolyta's sister, Emilia, and both fall instantly in love with her. Arcite is set free, but disguises himself rather than return to Thebes, while Palamon escapes with the help of the Jailer's Daughter, who loves him.
