Though the cause of death was not publicly disclosed, Michael Haneke confirmed that she committed suicide in a special feature on the Criterion Collection release of the film "Funny Games". Lothar died just a day before the fifth anniversary of her husband's death.

A German actress best known to cinema audiences for her work with Michael Haneke, Lothar starred alongside her husband Ulrich Mühe in Funny Games (1997), and after Mühe’s death featured in The White Ribbon (2009).
