R. D. Bandaranaike, was the fourth Prime Minister of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).
Biography. S W R D Bandaranaike was the fourth Prime Minister of Sri Lanka serving from April 1956, when his party, the Sri Lanka, Freedom Party, won a landslide victory at the general election, until his death at the hands of an assassin in September 1959.

After her husband, who became prime minister in 1956, was assassinated in 1959, she was induced by his Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to become the party’s leader.
