Synchronic was released at the end of 2020. While checking back for notable streaming movies that may have flown under our radar, we felt this one warranted a review.
Synchronic is the latest meditative mind-bender from directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who brought us honorable indie efforts Spring and The Endless. The film stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan as paramedics and best friends who get called to the scenes of bizarre, unexplained deaths featuring people who've taken a new and mysterious designer drug. Synchronic is a valiant, haunting film that makes excellent use of its New Orleans setting as well as its two leads, whose characters both find themselves at pivotal tipping points in their life right as these time-altering pills hit the streets.
Synchronic has big sci-fi ideas, but it nicely keeps the story small and focused on the relationship between the two main characters. Shot like a dream, but not in a way that distracts from the narrative or even makes the viewer doubt what's real, the movie makes superb use of New Orleans as a a city that hums with hauntings and harrowing history. ...
