The stadium has been the ballpark of the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball (MLB) since the team's inaugural season in 1998. The stadium is also used for college football, and from December 2008 to December 2017 was the home of the St. Petersburg Bowl, an annual postseason bowl game.

Sep 19, 2023 · The club’s current 30-year use agreement at Tropicana Field expires after the 2027 season, and the Rays are set to remain at their ballpark until then. If the agreement is approved and everything goes according to plan, ballpark construction would be begin in late 2024 and be completed by late ‘27.

Sep 19, 2023 · The Tampa Bay Rays have reached an agreement with St. Petersburg and Pinellas County for a new ballpark near Tropicana Field, the site of their current home. The new stadium will have a fixed dome, artificial turf, and a surrounding "ballpark village" with residences, retail, and entertainment. The Rays expect to be ready for the 2028 season.
