The Teatro Real (Royal Theatre) is an opera house in Madrid, Spain. Located at the Plaza de Oriente, opposite the Royal Palace, and known colloquially as El Real, it is considered the top institution of the performing and musical arts in the country and one of the most prestigious opera houses in Europe.

In 1977 it was declared a National Monument and in 1997, after 7 years of extensive works, the Teatro Real once again became home to Madrid’s opera scene. The building displays a combination of architectural styles. The theatre’s crown jewel, however, is its 1,472 m² stage area.
Desde 1995, el teatro está gestionado por una fundación pública en cuyo patronato están representados el Ministerio de Cultura del Gobierno de España, el Gobierno de la Comunidad de Madrid y el Ayuntamiento de Madrid. Desde 1998, su orquesta titular es la Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid .
