  2. Ted W. Lawson was born in Fresno, California, on 7 March 1917 as son of Peter Lawson and Mayme Julia Lawson. He attended Los Angeles City College in 1937–1938. At the Los Angeles City College he met his later wife Ellen Lawson. While his squadron was based at McChord, Lawson he married Ellen Arlene Reynolds.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he volunteered for a secret mission that evolved into the raid on Tokyo in April 1942. After retiring from the service in 1945, he went into private industry and worked on several projects that involved aircraft and space programs.
