As medical experts stress the importance of getting a high percentage of the population to take Covid-19 booster shots to combat the more transmissible omicron variant, a handful of restaurants in San Francisco, New York and Chicago are saying they will now require not only proof of vaccination to dine in, but proof of a booster shot as well for those eligible.

“We know there are people on each side of this issue but we have based our decisions on science and safety ever since the pandemic began,” Baker Miller said of its booster requirement in a post.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House’s chief medical advisor, stressed Sunday the importance of booster shots in light of the omicron variant, which appears to be more transmissible and more resistant to vaccines compared to previous variants. A Danish study published on Wednesday that has not yet been peer-reviewed found the initial doses of the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines for individuals 60 and up were less effective at preventing infection against the omicron variant compared to previous variants. Immunity also waned quicker against the omicron variant compared to the delta variant, but booster doses largely boosted immunity back up to initial levels. Dr. Egon Ozer, a researcher at Northwestern University, toldthe Associated Press on Monday an extra Pfizer shot increases antibody levels by 25 times and an extra Moderna shot increases them 37 times.

On Tuesday, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo proposedto make booster shots a mandatory component of vaccination against Covid-19. The proposal would require all eligible city employees to be boosted, as well as anyone who enters city-owned facilities. Full coverage and live updates on the Coronavirus

Washington, D.C., became the latest city to mandate that customers show proof of coronavirus vaccination before dining indoors at a restaurant, as new infections spike across the country.

While not mandated by officials, bars and restaurants in cities across the country have implemented their own vaccine policies. Establishments requiring customers to show proof of vaccination have been reported in cities including Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, Boston and Atlanta.

The U.S. surpassed 50 million coronavirus cases on Tuesday as cases continue to rise across the country. Hospitalizations and deaths also began climbing in late October, though they are still far below rates recorded at the peak of the U.S. outbreak in January. Officials have expressed concern over the spread of the newly-discovered omicron variant, which experts believe may be more infectious and has been identified in at least 30 states.
