A number of passages in the Bible refer to a book called “the book of life,” a figurative expression that originated from the ancient customs of (a) keeping various kinds of records like genealogical records (Neh. 7:5, 64; 12:22, 23) and of (b) registering citizens for numerous purposes ( Jer. 22:30; Ezek. 13:9 ).

- There was an Old Testament "book of life." In the OT the “book of life” (or its equivalents) was a register of the citizens of the theocratic community of Israel.
- Not all of God's "books" are the Lamb's book of life. The concept of a “book” was also used to portray God’s all-inclusive decree; i.e., the very days of one’s life are ordained and written in God’s “book” before one of them occurs

The phrase "book of life" is found only eight times, in eight verses, in the Bible. These occurrences are all found in the New Testament. Only one is written by the Apostle Paul (Philippians 4:3) while the remaining seven book references are recorded by John (Revelation 3:5, 8, 17:8, 20:12, 15, 21:27 and 22:19).
