Jul 10, 2011 · The Calcium Kid is a standard sports movie plot, but shot as a mock-documentary. The combination of camera shots and narration allow a fair amount of comedy moments, as well as the odd poignant exchange, especially the one between Jimmy and his father.

The humor is lame and simple, the sort of stuff a 9-year would normally come up with. The movie is made in 'new-English style'. The kind of style which Guy Ritchie first began to use in his movies. Fast editing, fast pace, a cool style and music, over-the-top character and lots of humor.
The Calcium Kid, on the other hand, looks like it ran out of money on the last reel, coming up with a random ending to get around the fact that the production obviously couldn't afford to finish what it had started. Bloom, himself, is not actually bad, valiantly managing to inject some sweetness into his role.
This mock-doc Rocky starts punchily enough with Snatch -style jab'n'jump-cuts and authentic South London settings, then proceeds at milk-van pace, as first time director de Rakoff milks every ...
