The little girl would stare at the smiley face in the ceiling while it was happening and in her mind created the Mr. Smiley monster, but it was her foster dad doing the monstrous things. But of course, since the girl created the monster in her head, when Theo touched the couch, she could only see it from the girl’s perspective.
