In my view, "The Homecoming: A Christmas Story" is one of the best Christmas movies of all time because it is not about Santa, a snowman, nor an abundance of gifts. On the contrary, the Waltons Christmas movie is about family, love, discipline, friendship, responsibility, and the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ, the reason for the season.

Hamner himself serves as narrator both in The Homecoming and in the popular, long-running series that followed, The Waltons.
Synopsis. In the middle of the Depression, John Walton is working in a mill, fifty miles away on Christmas Eve while his family prepares for his return. The children bring the cow back to the barn from the fields. John-boy, the eldest, tells the others they may not want to wait in the barn at midnight to hear the animals talk.

As the family prepares for the holiday, they anxiously await Pa's return home from his job in the city some 50 miles away.
