Sep 1, 2022 · The 1924 Immigration Act permanently connected immigration and naturalization by barring the entry of immigrants ineligible for citizenship. To end a decade-long debate over racial eligibility to citizenship, the act declared that any person ineligible to naturalize was now ineligible to immigrate.
The Immigration Act of 1924 limited the number of immigrants allowed entry into the United States through a national origins quota. The quota provided immigration visas to two percent of the total number of people of each nationality in the United States as of the 1890 national census. It completely excluded immigrants from Asia.
I n 1924, the U.S. Congress passed a law to limit immigration into the United States. The law—the Immigration Act of 1924 (also called the National Origins Act) —reflected worries that too many immigrants from southern and eastern Europe were flooding into the country. Many of these immigrants were Roman Catholics.
