The Julian Calendar, also known as the Old Style Calendar, was established by Julius Caesar in 46 BC, to replace the Roman calendar which was in use. It was the official calendar in the Roman Empire and the Western world until 1582, when it was replaced by the Gregorian Calendar.
The Julian calendar was first introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BC as a way to align the Roman calendar with the solar year. The calendar was based on a year of 365 days, with an extra day added every four years to account for the extra time it takes the Earth to orbit the Sun.
