Felix's (Jack Lemmon) wife has left him and he is contemplating suicide. His friends sense his depression and one of them, Oscar (Walter Matthau), volunteers to take him in until he is fine again. The two of them are like chalk and cheese - Oscar is fun-loving, gregarious and slovenly, Felix is a shy, stay-at-home, obsessive-compulsive neat ...
But Walter Matthau, for all of his natural charm, is not quite gruff and sloppy enough as Oscar, the role he created on Broadway. I retain a private preference for Oscar as splendidly played here in Chicago by Dan Dailey.

The Odd Couple, American comedy film, released in 1968, that was an adaptation of Neil Simon’s hit Broadway play, which popularized the comedic conceit of badly matched housemates.
After neurotic neat freak Felix Ungar (played by Jack Lemmon) is kicked out of his house by his frustrated wife, he moves in with his old friend, sportswriter Oscar Madison (played by Walter Matthau). Oscar’s slovenly habits go head-to-head with Felix’s obsessive-compulsive cleanliness, making for instant comedic conflict.
