The story was originally titled "Huapi" (畫皮) and first appeared in Pu Songling's anthology of supernatural tales, Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (Liaozhai) in 1740. It was first translated into English as "The Painted Skin" by the British sinologist Herbert A. Giles and was included in his 1880 translation of Strange Tales.
"The Painted Skin" is a short story by the Chinese writer Pu Songling collected in Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio in 1740. Literary critics have recognised it as one of the best and best-known entries in Strange Tales ; in particular, its textual detail and in-depth characterisation are lauded.
The story is set in the city of Nanjing, during the Ming Dynasty. In essence, it is a cautionary tale about the dangers of lust and desire. Pu Songling uses the supernatural elements of the story to highlight the danger of succumbing to temptation and the consequences of giving in to one’s base instincts.
Painted Skin (Chinese: 畫皮) is a 2008 supernatural-fantasy film directed by Gordon Chan, starring Donnie Yen, Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Zhao Wei, Sun Li and Qi Yuwu. Although the film is based partly on a supernatural premise, it is more of an action-romance than a horror film.
