Island of the Blue Dolphins Summary. Twelve-year-old Karana is gathering roots with her six-year-old brother, Ramo, when they catch sight of a red ship in the distance. Karana, Ramo, and their older sister Ulape are part of a tribe that lives on the Island of the Blue Dolphins, a small, dolphin-shaped island surrounded by kelp beds.

A big fight follows, and 40 native islanders are left dead – including Karana's dad. The nasty hunters take off with their precious otter furs. On the island, the people – mostly women now – continue to go on with their day-to-day lives. The women take over many of the men's chores, which makes things a bit tense around the village.
